Halien of the Month: Anthony AKA 'Tusk'
Tusk is an amazing and dedicated Haley fan. He is the creator of the HaleysTusk Youtube page, which has over 25,000 subscribers and 7 1/2 million views. Read below to find out why Tusk loves Haley & why he loves to share her music with other Haliens!
What part of the country do you live in?
I live in the Haley-starved reaches of the North West in Bothell, north of Seattle ;)
What are your top 3 favorite things to do?
Work on Haley videos, photos and graphics, spend time with my nieces and nephews and travel to see up and coming, talented musicians like Haley, Casey Abrams, Postmodern Jukebox and Morgan James.
What do you do for a living?
I work for my family company, manufacturing.
Tell us what it means to you to be a fan of Haley Reinhart?
First, it means I found in Haley what has been missing from music today, in my opinion, music that I can enjoy as well as feel connected to. No matter what she's singing about, there is a connection to her audience. Haley uses her talent not only to be heard, but also to bring people together. It's been said that Haley is an old soul, nowhere do you feel that more than when she is performing on stage, how she treats her fans, treats people generally. You can see that music is not only something she does, it is a very real part of her being.
Tell us about the first time you saw or heard Haley’s music? Where was it and what do you remember?
As stated above, I was no longer enjoying music I heard on the radio. In fact, I started regressing. I started looking back to my youth to hear music that made me "feel" something, The Eagles, Electric Light Orchestra, the Beatles, hell, even ABBA, who I listened to as they rose to fame from the Eurovision Song Contest, when I lived in England.
One day, I turned on the TV, American Idol was on. Cute show, I had a passing interest, so I watched the first few episodes. I'm embarrassed to say that I started rooting for a couple contestants "other" than Haley :P. As the episodes went on, I started getting a thrill every time this young woman from Chicago took her turn to sing. She had so much soul, the notes she was hitting also hit my soul. She began taking my interest, soon enough, I was all in for Haley Reinhart and rooted for her every week, every time she escaped elimination, I rejoiced.
I soon got a chance to see Haley sing live, a 280 mile drive to Spokane, Washington, where I won tickets to see her at radio Station KCDA, 5 years ago April 2nd, 2012. Little did I know, the 280 mile drive to see Haley that day would be the shortest distance of all my trips to see Haley. Please Haley, a show in the Seattle area soon? ;)
How do you show your fandom for Haley?
I think the thing I'm most proud of is Team HaleyFans. One thing I discovered was, a lot of older fans of my generation had the same experience as me, looking for "real" music. For whatever reason, maybe skills I had from being creative, made it easier for me to take to social media, when once I was petrified of it. I started my You tube Channel in October of 2013, simply to share my experience at Haley shows when others didn't have the opportunity. Early on, it was all my videos, Carnegie Hall, Lollapalooza, I saw Haley at the Listen Up! debut at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, in Vegas. Soon I became aware that my posts were reaching farther. People my age, who weren't interested in editing video, going on social media, wanted to share their experiences too. Photographers such as my very good friend through this fandom, Greg Williams, gave me wonderful photos to enhance my videos. Some of these fans didn't want or need credit, but I didn't want to make it seem like they were my videos, so we came up the name "Team HaleyFans" as a catch all for credit. Then it grew from there....Team HaleyFans is a team effort, from our love and wanting to support Haley, spreading the word about her through this effort.
I'm proud to say that from simple beginnings, we, Team HaleyFans, have gained over 25,000 subscribers, nearly 7 1/2 Million views, over 6.8 million of them in the last 3 years (1/1/2015-present), since Haley joined Postmodern Jukebox. I've had submissions from overseas, Switzerland, Australia, UK, Berlin...fans from across the globe have contacted me, or I've made friends with. I had no idea of the reach of Youtube until this mega expansion the last 3 years.
What in your mind makes Haley Reinhart stand out from any other artist?
First and foremost, it's Haley's voice. It is so distinct. Maybe it's because I'm a fan, but I can always pick out Haley's voice in every group situation. There is that natural rasp, that texture that adds so much character to her voice. That voice can go grunge and gritty to crystal clear clarity. It can go from a caressing whisper to a concussive sonic blast. With that voice she can be a Jazzy Chanteuse, a Bluesy Song Bird, a Funky Freak or a Rock Goddess. She is a Voice, a Passion and a Personality all wrapped up in one. I love that she's learned/learning about self reliance, trust in your instinct and your talent, because, boy does she have a ton of that. When it's all said and done, we will look back and wonder how lucky were we that we got to see/hear/know about Haley Reinhart so early in her career.
What currently is the most played song in your music library?
This, I can honestly say...all of Haley's music. Posting and editing over 400 videos for four years, I listen to and enjoy all of Haley's songs, originals or covers. When you enjoy ice cream, doesn't matter if it comes in a cake, a bar, or a cone, it's ice cream. I want to say I like Haley's more rock oriented songs, but ....Creep, At Last, Behave, Walking On Heaven.... I can't choose one, they all make me feel good and I love that I have the opportunity to enjoy so many live performance thanks to the work I do with Team HaleyFans. I do sneak in a Beatles song now and again, or go back to my rock roots for some Van Halen, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith or Nirvana.
What’s your favorite song from Haley Reinhart and why?
Currently, I "can't get enough" of "Behave", from Better. That song, the recorded one, live, I get an instant rush of endorphins, thrilling and relaxing at the same time. I love how she shifts attitudes and emotions. I love how it's almost nonsensical lyrics and techniques remind me of the Sgt Peppers, experimental, stage in the Beatles' career
What is your favorite album from Haley Reinhart and why?
Ugh... I have to choose? Listen Up! is Haley's first album, I will never "hate" Interscope as some do for what happened to Haley, BUT I will always thank them that they allowed Haley to write 13 of 14 songs on her debut album.... I love this album from the first piano chords that begin "Free" :)
Then, there's Better. Less "pop" and it feels more "Haley"...she's clearly having fun in these songs, so many moods, Harry joining her. Better, from its beginnings as a 6 song EP to a full 10 song album, Haley's fans could not have asked for a finer album that shows a little more of Haley's musical personality.
Haley frequently collaborates with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox… what’s your favorite cover by the group and Haley so far and why?
When we heard Haley perform "Creep" for the first time with Postmodern Jukebox in Lyon, France, I was smitten. So much rawness imbued so beautifully in magical notes, rough and crystal clear, a reflection of Haley's vocal range (and scatting!)
Haley voices the character of Bill on Netflix’s F is for Family? Did you ever picture Haley being the voice of a little boy?
I believe she had said in an interview that she had done Charlie Brown's voice before, but I'm so pleased that Haley is able to expand her brand into other opportunities. I fully expect that some smart company will hire her to represent their product, she is a fine spokesperson with talent and personality to win over anyone. Also, I'm excited that the always networking Haley will meet someone from her experience with FiFF that will be an introduction to seeing her in some acting capacity. One of my ultimate hopes, "big screen" wise, is that one of Haley's songs will be used as a Bond Song....Spiderweb? Liar?
What’s your favorite episode so far?
Episode six, funny but poignant... and we get to hear Haley singing "Oh Holy Night".... we're still waiting for the full song, Haley ;)
Are you excited for Season 2 to come out?
Of course! we get 10 episodes this time. Haley will get to be in the opening credits as "Bill" in Season 2, and her name recognition will grow. Hopefully, a second successful season might mean not only a 3rd season and Haley will get to represent the show on Talk shows in addition to her more well known actors, Bill Burr, Justin Long etc...
How do you stay connected with your favorite artists?
Social media, my time watching TV is significantly less since I became a fan of Haley's... this social media phobe is perhaps too plugged in, not sure how to unplug after 4+ years.
What’s your favorite piece of Haley Reinhart memorabilia?
I turned 50 a year and a half ago. Unbeknownst to me, one of Team HaleyFans, Ken Smith, got Haley to autograph a Happy 50th Birthday note to me, in Chicago, got permission from PMJ photographer, Emily Butler, to print one of her Haley photographs, and put it all into a frame. It was such an incredibly thoughtful gesture and I can't thank him enough :)
What was your first concert ever, the last concert you’ve seen and what will be the next?
First concert ever? I think it was a Judas Priest/Aerosmith/Ted Nugent show in Seattle... I don't remember much of it, I was young and we snuck in too much alcohol :/ Last concert, I saw was PMJ artist Ariana Savalas in Seattle. Next? I was hoping a Haley show, but for now, I've bought tickets to see Morgan James in California and Seattle.
How many times have you seen Haley Reinhart live?
Last time I counted.... 34 times including being at the Show Me Your Moves video shoot, over 4+ years, 5 times with Postmodern Jukebox.
Did you attend any shows on the Haley’s recent U.S. Tour? If so, which ones?
Yes, I saw Haley on her #BetterTour at the El Rey in LA, at the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego and at Lincoln Hall in Chicago.
What’s the furthest you’ve traveled to see a show?
Since early Idol, I knew that the people in the United Kingdom would LOVE an artist like Haley (Adele, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Norah Jones) so early in Haley's Idol journey, I had made a pact with a fan in England: IF Haley ever performs in the UK, we would both see her. Fate had Haley joining up with Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox. Their European tour took them to London on March 22, 2015. Once it was clear that Haley would be performing their show in London, that opportunity presented itself. I looked up the cost to fly there, turns out, it was impossibly cheap ($200 + miles) so I booked a flight, saw my first PMJ show where I met Scott Bradlee and Morgan James for the first time and witnessed Haley absolutely stun the London crowd with her performance of "Creep" (before PMJ officially posted their viral video of the song).
Tell us something about Haley Reinhart that a lot of other fans may not know?
She is so genuine, but others know that...honestly, Haley is who she appears to be, no pretense or judgment. I know she values her personal time, but still has time for fans. I guess, I can say, you haven't seen Haley until you see her interact with young children. It's a favorite thing for me to watch when I see it. Their eyes are as wide as her smile :)
If you could tell Haley Reinhart one thing, what would it be?
Thank you, thank you so much for everything. Thank your parents for raising such quality human beings, in addition to talent. I've been lucky enough to know Harry, the little I have, and can see where his humility, talent and personality is reflected in you. He gushes constantly about you, you can feel his pride. Thank Harry and you for your depth of musical knowledge, someone your age should not be aware of the music you are, yet you are and we can thank Harry and Patti for that. Also, it thrills me to be able to hear Beatles fans like you and your family perform the music of the Fab Four.
I have mentioned to Harry several times, and maybe to you. My ultimate wish is to hear you guys perform Side 2 of Abbey Road, some day. Harry, the perfectionist, is worried he couldn't possibly do the Beatles' music justice....but I've seen you guys perform, I have ultimate faith that IF you ever take up the challenge...it will be heavenly for this fellow Beatles' fan.
Do you stay in touch with other Haliens? Tell us how your mutual fandom has helped you connect with other.
Again, social media and the reach that my Youtube channel has given, to be in touch, make friends with fans in Berlin, Australia, the Philippines, the UK and cities across the United States. So I want to take this opportunity to thank and hat tip to some members of Team HaleyFans: Greg Williams, Mona Howerton, Ken Smith, Steve Klummp, Barb Barrett, Pat Friedrich, Tim Trusler, Randy Chapman, Brent Preece, John Andrews, Wolfgang, Lyca Neery, OZMan (Brian), Miguel and I'm sure I'm forgetting more (apologies).... I can do none of what I've been able to in support of Haley without this team’s contributions, we are a team in every sense of the word, united in the cause of supporting Haley. A special hat tip to my partner in crime, Rachel Calderon (Ms. Cloves), for being a defender and a friend. This old guy sometimes needs to understand a younger generation. Rachel provides that perspective for me.
Haley Reinhart is currently recording her new studio album… any guesses as to the title of the album and what it will sound like?
Haliens have nick named Haley's 3rd album "HR3" but it seems Haley has been hinting that "What's that Sound?" might be it. Her Spotify playlist posts seem to indicate that it could be more of a throwback 60’s-70’s joint. I’ve noticed this vibe reflected in the outfits she’s been wearing.
