Halien of the Month: Carlos
Meet Carlos! When he's not busy with his own creative pursuits, Carlos expresses his Haley Reinhart love on social media. Check out his interview and Haley memes below!
What part of the country/World do you live in?
I live in Panama City, Panama, a small country in Central America with a great mix of people, beautiful beaches in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, delicious food, and amazing local music like Luci and the Soulbrokers, Monalisa y Rodrigo, Erika Baum, Lunchbox Heroes, and more! It’s so diverse that if you’re in the mood for dancing and dining, escaping to a desert island and climbing a drafty hill on the same weekend, this is the place to be. Oh, and if you’re seriously thinking about visiting, please bring shorts and sunscreen.
What are your top 3 favorite things to do?
One of my favorite things to do in the entire universe is singing and dancing. My shower is my stage, and my neighbors are saints for not complaining… and well sometimes I get to perform on actual stages when I’m in a musical. There’s nothing that brings me more joy than listening to music and also expressing it myself.
I love spending time and playing with my dog Sméagol. He’s been with me for almost 12 years now and I can’t picture my life without him. He’s just the sweetest most loving creature, so adorable and funny (but he doesn’t know it :P ).
If I have the opportunity to go to the beach with people I love, my music, and my dog, I will be happy for sure. To me there’s nothing more relaxing than a beautiful sunset by the ocean breeze with amazing music, special people, and a fluffy doggo by your side.
What do you do for a living?
I’ve been a creative copywriter and actor (mostly in musical theater) for over ten years now, acting being my biggest passion of the two. Being on a stage and sharing my soul through this art is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences a person can have. In this way I can relate 100% to Haley. You can say she’s been a big inspiration in helping me find my own individual style. That daring attitude of hers to stick to what is true to her is one to look up to. She’s also been one of my muses for a new personal project I’m pursuing as an independent performance artist. Without giving too much away, I can say I’m working on creative content with that includes my distinct sense of humour, great music and lots of fun. It’s crazy, sexy, bold, colorful, and it blends together my passion for comedy, movies, music, and drama. At this moment I’m in the early creative stages, doing a lot of concept work and writing in hopes of launching some material in the near future.
Tell us what it means to you to be a fan of Haley Reinhart?
For starters, it’s quite gratifying living in a time when an artist like Haley Reinhart is around. Her music and voice somehow manage to touch your soul, and ignite feelings that only great art can do. It’s also really interesting being a fan since the beginning and seeing her evolution as an artist. Every album she releases surpasses the next, and makes my daily music routine exciting and refreshing. The fact that I relate so much to Haley makes being her fan even that more special. As member of the LGBTQIA community, having a role model like her is a sweet deal. Her loving, free-spirited and accepting personality, is just the kind that I look for in my friends. It’s great having someone in her position to be like our second voice. She stands up for what’s right, and always reinforces the importance of self-worth. Like other similar artists I admire, Haley does things her way, makes the music that is true to her heart, and is extremely classy in the process. No wonder she describes herself as Adele’s sassier sister.
Tell us about the first time you saw or heard Haley’s music? Where was it and what do you remember?
To my luck, I’ve always been a diehard American Idol fan. I’m glad I was still watching during its 10th season, so I got to witness Haley since her first audition... but it wasn’t until she slayed Randy, JLO, and Steven’s existence with God Bless the Child that I became a crazed fan. That audition just blew me away completely. I’d honestly never seen anyone sing like her before. It was really the coolest thing ever for me to see. I’m really passionate about music, so I was living for that moment like there was no tomorrow.
How do you show your fandom for Haley?
I buy her music and listen to it many times a week, with the occasional break here and there. There’s just something about her voice and songs that make you feel good instantly. It also helps me develop creative ideas.
I also obsessively tell my friends about her and share anything exciting that pops up about her music career. Aside from that I’m very expressive about her on social media, especially on Instagram and Twitter.
This one time, at band camp, I got her a really cool gift. To be honest, at first it felt odd getting someone I didn’t personally know a gift. I didn’t wanna seem creepy, but then I said to myself “If this amazing girl has touched me with her music in countless positive ways, what’s wrong with me showing some gratitude” so I went ahead and bought her something I’ll discuss later… :)
When I had more spare time, I used to make funny memes, tweet the craziest messages and participate in fan-made videos we made to celebrate her album releases. It was a fun way for fans to fool around and share their love. Oh, and I think I Photoshopped her on Jessica Rabbit’s body once too.
What in your mind makes Haley Reinhart stand out from any other artist?
She truly enjoys what she does, is a master in her craft, and is true to herself. Unlike other popular artists today, she really cares about delivering positive messages through her craft, and making real music. Like I said before, nobody sings like her; when you listen to any of her songs, albeit originals or covers, you can tell that she immerses herself in the story and delivers each note with so much passion that you can’t help but join her for the amazing ride. To top that off, she brilliantly combines all of her influences from jazz to classic rock into one syrupy concoction of musical gooiness. Her talent is unmatched.
What currently is the most played song in your music library?
So here’s the thing… I mostly listen to music on Spotify, and for some reason the app doesn’t keep track on your most played songs, but according to intuition and potential memory, I’d go with either My Cake or Good or Bad… these two songs are always present in my head whenever I feel like getting my disco on or portraying a two-faced vixen in my room and/or car and/or shower.
What’s your favorite song from Haley Reinhart and why?
This is definitely a hard pick, because I’m torn between two of Haley’s most epic originals, Good or Bad and Somewhere in Between, but I think I will have to go with the former. Good or Bad has everything that I like about Haley as an artist. The lyrics are witty and sexy, Haley’s voice goes from syrupy to raspy in lightning speed, and her growl is so on point she makes lions question their rank in the food chain. Oh, and the production qualities, instrumentation and melody of the song is alluring, to say the least.
What is your favorite album from Haley Reinhart and why?
All of her albums are special in their own way but I must go with What’s that Sound? This album showcases the best of Haley in one package. We get fresh renditions of timeless classics that are dear to her and three originals that show her growth as a songwriter and artist in general. The fact that she recorded the album on analog tape in Sunset Studios just makes it extra special... AND she released it on vinyl. If Haley Reinhart is not #PersonGoals I don’t know who is.
Runner-Up - Better: This is Haley’s first album as an independent artist, which she co-wrote and co-produced. The result is a perfect mix of all her musical influences and each song shows just how multifaceted she is.
Haley frequently collaborates with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox… what’s your favorite cover by the group and Haley so far and why?
Definitely Creep, because not only is it a vocal masterclass of epic proportions, but it gained Haley tons of new fans an allowed her to bring back a side of her we got to enjoy during her Idol days. She not only sounds hot, but she looks hot, and the whole vibe of the video and performance oozes retro badassery.
Haley voices the character of Bill on Netflix’s F is for Family? Did you ever picture Haley being the voice of a little boy?
Honestly, before the first season came out, I never actively pictured Haley as a little boy, that would’ve been creepy and worthy of a restraining order. But now that she plays one on TV, I can tell you that she kicks some serious booty. Since Idol, Haley’s been quite the performer and I always pictured her in acting one day. I think F is for Family is just the beginning for her. If Austin Powers 4 never happens and she doesn’t get to play a fembot, there’s gotta be another role out there with her name on it… which just gave me an idea: Imma go write a spy movie for Haley:

What’s your favorite episode so far?
I don’t recall I have a favorite episode. All of them have some great moments, but one of my favorite scenes is from the Season 2 premiere. Remember when little Bill opens the bathroom door and finds Kevin entering the evil gates of puberty? After that disturbing incident, the poorboy never saw ketchup the same way again.
Season 2 premiered on Netflix recently, have you watched all the episodes already?
Yes I did, and it surpassed the first season, which makes me even more excited for Season 3, where I hope we’ll get more episodes with Haley singing a Christmas classic in Frank Murphy’s radio. #ABoyCanDream.
How do you stay connected with your favorite artists?
I follow my absolute favorites on social media, because I’m really interested in the album-making process. It’s cool seeing updates and behind the scenes videos. I also love watching performance videos on Youtube from either artists I already know or from random playlists I discover. Gotta keep it fresh!
What’s your favorite piece of Haley Reinhart memorabilia?
I’d have to say the most special to me is her Listen Up! Calendar, because it’s part of her first album as a professional recording artist, plus I’m kind of an old soul myself, so seeing it on my night stand makes me feel like a kid in the 60s. I’m also a huge fan of The Sandlot, the movie that the photoshoot was inspired on, so every time I see those pictures I travel back to my childhood and remember watching the infamous pool scene for the first time.
What was your first concert ever, the last concert you’ve seen and what will be the next?
My first concert ever was Vanilla Ice, who I went to see when I was around 8 years old. The last concert I went to was Ed Sheeran in Berlin (probably one of the best nights of my life), and the next concert I’m going to is the Fifth Harmony PSA Tour right here in Panama. Camila Cabello is not coming though… I heard she quit the band to go solo and sing about Cuba or something (I play with you, I already knew that).
How many times have you seen Haley Reinhart live?
This is the question that tests my credibility as a Halien. Are you ready?...
... Ok, so I’ve never seen Haley Reinhart live. Please don’t banish me! As a foreign lad I haven’t yet had the opportunity to flee my country during one of her tours. Any chance she would come as a special guest performer to the Panama Jazz Festival? It’s quite a hot weekend of music, and I have a feeling people would love her here! “Dear Concord Gods, please make this happen.”
Did you attend any shows on Haley’s recent U.S. or European Tour? If so, which ones?
In a way, yes… I saw every single video on Youtube courtesy of some really awesome Haliens who physically attended. I’ve seen them ALL, countless times. Does this re-establish my credibility as a Halien or I am just making it worse? (insert facepalm emoji)
Will you be attending any shows on her Fall 2017 What’s That Sound? Tour?
Aww, now you’re just being cruel. As of right now I won’t be able to attend her upcoming US Tour, but if you somehow manage to fly me to L.A I’d be happy to go. I promise I’ll arrange my accommodations. Please team Haley, help make me a more convincing Halien Life Form. I will forever be in your debt.
What’s the furthest you’ve traveled to see a concert?
While I originally flew to Germany for work, getting to see Ed Sheeran in Berlin was an added bonus, so you could say that’s the furthest I’ve “traveled to see a concert”. :)
Tell us something about Haley Reinhart that a lot of other fans may not know?
I think you might like to ask that question to PJ, director of the HIA (Halien Intelligence Agency). I swear that dude knows stuff about Haley that not even Haley knows. All jokes aside though, other fans may not know that Haley owns a groovy John Lennon action figure that I got her a few years ago. (I hope she still has it LOL, because I must admit I loved it so much I almost kept it for myself). Other more recent fans may not know that she auditioned for Simon Cowell during Idol’s 9th Season. I’m still hoping that video is released some day.
If you could tell Haley Reinhart one thing, what would it be?
Exactly this sentence: Please let me join your L.A. squad.
I would also thank her from the bottom of my heart for sharing her talent. It sounds crazy, but literally her music is so powerful it can add a shade of color to the grayest of days. Other Haliens can confirm this, right? There’s such a special quality to her music and the way she delivers her songs that really touch and inspire me in different ways. The least I can do is thank her in person for her wonderful gift.
Do you stay in touch with other Haliens? Tell us how your mutual fandom has helped you connect with others.
Yes, I have a “secret” twitter account where I follow mostly Haliens and artists. It’s actually a pretty cool community we have. I’ve never met any of them in person (yet) but they’re really kind, creative, and funny people. We’ve all been fans of Haley since the beginning so for me it kinda feels like we’re long distance friends.
Haley Reinhart has released her new album What’s That Sound?… give us your top 3 tracks from the album and why?
Since it’s really challenging for me to pick a favorite anything in life, I will base my answer on which songs make me feel like a sassy b***h! But I love every track, I promise!
Somewhere in between: Where do I begin? Sweet Jeezus, this track! As a movie buff, this Haley original takes me to an epic western, and boy do I love it! Interestingly enough, its soulful melodies could fit into either a new Tarantino feature or Agent 007’s next installment. Mad props to Anders Grahn and Rob Kleiner for their work alongside Haley on this haunting record. One of my favorite things about it is how different it is to anything Haley’s done in the past, which also makes it very exciting to listen to, specially if you use your imagination, and/or some leafy greens. I personally like to wander off into a song and picture a spontaneous music video in my mind, and this song is perfect for that.
Light my fire: Ever since I was a kid, I loved listening to this song and I’m not mistaken, I used to sing it all the time on my karaoke system. Having said that, when I heard it could potentially be a bonus track for the album I knew it would be special and pictured how this rendition would sound. To my luck I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome: I mean, everything from the epic drums, to the keyboard, to Haley’s corky pronunciation of fah-yoor, to the horns, the growls, and the groove is out of this world. Somehow reminds me of My Cake at times.
These Boots Are Made For Walkin’: Although a surprising choice for a favorite song, this one keeps growing on me with each listen. I seem to rather enjoy the playfulness of it, and like with other songs, I wander into the story of it and picture the craziest videos in my mind. Jessica Simpson, who?
RUNNER UP: Time of the Season: I’m so happy Haley featured her musical soulmate, the genius that is Casey Abrams on this album, and this song does justice to their signature duets.
Give us your thoughts on…
‘Baby It’s You’ music video
I really dig the vintage look to it. The cinematography, set design and Haley’s beautiful wardrobe changes and acting make this one a real treat for the eyes and ears.
